I think we're both making a similar point from different angles. Birders don't only bird in sewage lagoons and our idea of what counts as a polluted space (i.e. a sewage lagoon over a cattail marsh) means that this part of the argument falls flat for me. If birders ONLY birded in these types of environments, then maybe. In NJ, we rarely bird in these types of habitats because we don't have many of them and the ones few we do have are not publicly accessible. I agree that this was a bit of a low blow.
