¿ Que pasa?, originally uploaded by Gavatron.
We spent our last day in Lima at the Lima Zoo.
Generally speaking, I don’t like visiting zoos, but I was curious to see what a zoo in Peru would look like, how the animals were kept [...]
I was reading about this guy’s “biggest Star Wars Collection in the galaxy” when I came across this gem in the Q&A:
JD: What’s the oldest [Star Wars toy in your collection]?
RF: The oldest ones are the first series of vintage toys that came out with the movie in 1977.
Flashing across [...]
I’ve changed the permalink structure of this blog so that the URLs for each post make more sense to humans rather than machines. The only problem with this update is that any old hyperlinks to material on the blog are now b0rked. Given that I have a readership of me, it shouldn’t be too big [...]
Heather and I went yesterday and saw the documentary Up the Yangtze. I thoroughly enjoyed it (and you can find out more about the film, if you’re interested) and was equally disturbed by it–not the movie itself, but the subtext. Thumbnail sketch: China has opened up to Western Tourism, and Western Tourists are interested [...]
New Years Tradition, originally uploaded by Gavatron.
We started to notice in Tumbes that people were selling papier-mâché heads. Lots of ‘em. And we didn’t know why. Then the heads started to show up on stuffed bodies, like you can see here.

Love was (literally) in the air this weekend–a female grey squirrel was in heat and was getting a lot of attention from the boys in the neighbourhood. She (the grey one here) wasn’t too sure about the whole [...]
So, I was uploading this photograph taken in Peru of a Turkey Vulture. Now, with its red head and the fact that it was on the beach in Mancora, I kind of thought that it looked like it had a sunburn. The thing is, TVs have red [...]
Washin’ the undies, originally uploaded by Gavatron.
I brought three pairs of underwear on the trip. There. I said it. I wore and washed the three amigos throughout the trip.
Heather continues to bring this up like its some point of conversation when [...]
About me
I am an education researcher and practitioner, with a focus on higher education and the environment. I consider myself, above all, a naturalist. I'm the pack-mate of two border terriers. I live within the Speed River Watershed in Guelph, Ontario. I enjoy photography. I lead nature tours across North America. I teach courses on Natural History. I likely spend too much time on the Internet.
Oh, and the opinions expressed here are wholly my own.
